The Northland Prep Academy golf team shot an opening-round 299 to finish the first day of the AIA Division III state golf tournament in fourth place.
The Spartans are making their first-ever trip to the state tournament, which is taking place in Tucson this year. The top 15 qualifying teams and top 15 individuals who are not on a qualifying team are competing in the event.
Senior Vincent Cortese fired a school-record 3-under 67 in the opening round to lead the Spartans. Cortese, who is competing in his fourth consecutive state tournament, recorded four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey over the Del Ulrich course. The score was good for a tie for third place out of the 90 players in the event.
Sophomore Simon Trebon shot a personal-best even-par 70. Other NPA scores included sophomore Brian Landauer, who shot a personal-best 78. Senior Devon Gussio recorded an 84 to round out the Spartan scoring.
The state tournament concludes on Friday with play being held on the Randolph Park course.
