Falling to the No. 3 team in the state of Nevada, the Flagstaff Eagles girls basketball team lost in the semifinals of the Diamond Bracket of the 2017 Gator Winter Classic to the Spring Valley Grizzlies on Saturday.

After the 78-42 victory over the Eagles, the Grizzlies went on to win the Nevada-based tournament title against the Liberty Patriots, the top-ranked team in the state of Nevada. The loss was Flagstaff's first of the year, a run of 15 straight wins to start the year including tournament play.

The Coconino girls basketball team also wrapped up its tournament with a loss Saturday, falling to 6A Conference Rincon/University, 36-30. The game ended the Panthers run at the Tucson Cactus Classic with a 2-2 record.

Monique Ware led the Eagles with 13 points and Emma Doskicz added nine. After going into the second quarter facing a 19-16 deficit, the Eagles struggled to steal away the Grizzlies' momentum in the second and third quarters. Having taken a 47-27 lead into half time, Spring Valley broke open the game with a 20-2 third quarter.

Eagles head coach Tyrone Johnson said it was good for his team to face an opponent like Spring Valley before heading back into the regular season, which begins again for Flagstaff on Friday at home against the Mingus Union Marauders.
