Using a sophomore-laden lineup, the Coconino Panthers went 2-0 on Wednesday in their final home meet of the season, beating fellow Division III, Section Four teams Mingus Union and Chinle to improve to 14-5 overall.
Coconino sophomores Pedro Billups and Haiden Kendall ended their days with perfect records, including much-needed victories against Mingus. Billups, who pushed his overall individual record to 27-4, tallied a first-period pin against Chinle and a decision over his Mingus opponent while wrestling at 106 pounds. Kendall had both his victories come in the first period by fall.
The Panthers, taking eight sophomores into the multi, handled a short-handed Chinle Wildcats team, 58-24, and edged the Mingus Union Marauders, 44-33, despite giving up five straight falls from the 126 to 152 weight classes.
Coconino's Brandon Barreras, a 160-pounder who finished the day 1-1, stopped the bleeding and trimmed Mingus' lead to 30-20. From there, a pair of seniors in Phillip Flores and Devin Gamboa won the next two weight classes with pins, lifting Coconino back on top at 32-30. Mingus had to forfeit at 195 and 285, hurting its chances at taking the match.
Jaden Hart provided a key pin against Mingus for Coconino at 120 pounds, as the Panthers opened up against the Marauders with a 16-0 advantage. Against Chinle, Talyn Godwin added a pin at 145 pounds and Tiberone Clarke followed suit at heavyweight for the Panthers.
