The Northland Prep Spartans opened their boys tennis season with a victory, beating in-town opponent Basis Flagstaff, 8-1, on Tuesday at Continental Country Club.

The Spartans swept the doubles matches and dropped one singles match at the No. 1 spot against the Yeti, who are in their inaugural season as a program. Winston Zeng of Basis bested Northland Prep's Adam Nicol, 6-0, 6-3, before his team moved to 0-2 to start the year.

The Spartans dominated the rest of singles, dropping just one game the rest of the way as No. 2 Fred Gooding, No. 4 Drew Parker, No. 5 Joey Haertzen and No. 6 Markus Moezzi all went 6-0, 6-0 for the Spartans. On court three, Reilley Luedde beat Brandon Kay 6-1, 6-0.

Zeng teamed up with Bennet Brixon at No. 1 doubles and fell to Luedde and Haertzen, 8-2. Kay and Austin Rae lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, to Nicol and Gooding, and Aaron Jensen and Patrick Hsu went down 8-0 to Parker and Moezzi.

Basis is scheduled to face Page next Wednesday at Page, and Northland Prep is slated to play Sedona Red Rock on Tuesday at Continental.
