The possibility of three wins in a row sounds really good to the Northern Arizona football team right now.
With the Lumberjacks' offense producing the way it has been, the possibility could turn into reality today when the Jacks (4-5 overall, 3-4 Big Sky Conference) take on Weber State.
The road hasn't been very friendly to NAU, but the Wildcats (3-6, 3-3) have lost three in a row, and the Jacks are confident they can keep the winning streak alive.
"We did some really good things against Northern Colorado, and I felt really comfortable," said junior quarterback Cary Grossart about the Lumberjacks' 34-14 win over the Bears last week. "Now we're just building on what we've been doing."
If the Jacks can keep up what Grossart and the NAU offense has done over the past two weeks, they will put themselves in a good position to win.
"(Our success lately has been) the ability to run the ball and also throw it effectively," offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren said. "The last couple games we've been able to do both, and that's awesome as a playcaller because you can keep guys off balance.
"We've also been better at executing and scoring points, and we've been able to move the ball."
Head coach Jerome Souers -- who was unavailable for comment because of an illness -- has stressed the team's need to sustain drives, and the Jacks have responded.
In last week's win over Northern Colorado, NAU controlled the time of possession by keeping the ball for nearly 40 minutes, compared to the Bears' 20. Lindgren said it's helped that the NAU defense has also stepped up its game and has been getting other team's offenses off the field quickly.
"Our defense and special teams have been giving us some great field position, and that's great for us," he said. "It helps us move the ball and keep possession, and if we can continue that, it'll be great."
It also helps that the team morale is up after two straight wins.
"Everything's better when you win, and we have higher morale and even with two games left, we're starting to buy more into what we're doing," Grossart said. "We believe that we can finish the year 6-5."
But finishing 6-5 starts with winning today's tough road-game against a team that has beaten the Jacks three times in a row.
The Lumberjacks know Weber State is better than its record suggests and aren't taking the Wildcats lightly at all.
"I approach every team the same way, and we know they're going to come for us," Grossart said. "I'm sure they feel confident at home, and despite their losses, they're a good team. They're going to be hungry, but we want to win, too."
The Wildcats will also have a little extra motivation to win their last home game of the year, as long time head coach Ron McBride has announced he will retire after the season.
Grossart said that will make winning on the road even harder, but that the team has a good plan.
"Being able to win on the road is huge, and we think we can do it against Weber," Grossart said. "The (27-26 road) win against Sacramento State is encouraging, because we feel like we can go out on the road and beat a quality team."
A big part of the Jacks' plan is to continue its balanced offensive attack. That, and to get the ball in sophomore running back Zach Bauman's hands as much as possible.
"He's a super-talented player and we try to get him the ball a lot," Lindgren said. "He's also a very talented receiver and it was fun to watch him catch the ball and run routes.
"He's drawing the attention of the defenses, and that allows other guys to go out and make some plays."
Bauman leads the team with 12 touchdowns and had 250 all-purpose yards last week against the Bears. Bauman ran for 124 yards and two scores and also scored a touchdown as part of a five-catch, 126-yard receiving day.
Bauman has credited his blockers for much of his success, and Lindgren said a big part of the offense has been playing with a solid offensive line.
"We've been fortunate enough to keep our core group on the offensive line together for the season," he said. "They've been a lot more consistent in both the run game and in protection."
The defense has also been solid as of late and has held opponents to 126.9 rushing yards per game.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 this afternoon, and the game can be heard on 105.1 FM and online at www.bigtalkerradio.com. The game can be viewed online www.bigskytv.org.
