Coconino and Flagstaff Little League will merge together, the leagues' presidents announced on Tuesday. The merger will create a new league called West Flagstaff Little League and will maintain affiliation with Little League International in Williamsport, Pa.
"The two leagues, which had cooperated on joint programs for several years, will benefit from the consolidation of programs and resources in the future," Coconino Little League president Chris Jacobsen said in a release. "Operating as one league will benefit the players by giving us the ability to expand current programs that are working and create new programs starting with next season."
The new West Flagstaff Little League will begin playing in the spring of 2011. Registration for the spring season is expected to begin in late January.
Little League International rules require participants to register with a league by geographical boundary. West Flagstaff Little League's boundaries will be the west side of Flagstaff bordered by Enterprise Road on the east and extending to Parks on the west. It includes the following areas: Bellemont, Baderville, Munds Park, Kachina Village, Mountainaire and NAU.
Little League International and its affiliates operate youth baseball and softball programs for children ages 4 to 18. Other Little League affiliates in the area are Continental Little League, Mt. Elden Little League and Flagstaff Girls Softball Little League. West Flagstaff Little League is a nonprofit organization run completely by volunteers.
