Page’s girls basketball team earned a change of state tournament venue to Glendale Saturday night with their third win over Ganado this season, 57-34 in Kayenta.
This one, putting Page into Thursday’s Division III quarterfinals at Gila River Arena, was much less predictable than the 63-40 win over Ganado in Page on Jan. 27 and the 62-22 rout in Chinle on Feb. 10.
The 15th-seeded Hornets fell into a 16-2 hole after the first quarter but scrapped their way into contention. They drew within 10 points midway through the third quarter before Page junior Ashley Dempsey hit a three-point play and then a layup to give the second-seeded Sand Devils a 36-21 lead.
Dempsey led all scorers with 18 points and senior guard Ember Sloan added 14 at neutral-site Monument Valley High School. Sloan got the 32-1 Sand Devils going with two 3-pointers in the opening minutes toward a 12-0 lead. Page, winners of eight in a row, helped force 27 turnovers by Ganado (14-11) and outrebounded the Hornets 29-15.
The Sand Devils will meet No. 7 seed Holbrook, who won 69-47 over No. 10 Monument Valley at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the round of eight. Page is 3-0 against the Roadrunners this season, by 28, 14 and 17 points respectively.
Page head coach Justin Smith’s teams are now 14-4 in six state tournaments.
