It is now being proposed to once again increase taxes, this time a sales tax for parks, to preserve and acquire open spaces, etc. It is similar to the increased taxes just passed for police and fire…Motherhood and Apple Pie. (I am not debating the actual need, which I’m sure is laudable, just the revenue sourcing).
Here are some tongue-in-cheek alternatives to increasing the sales tax:
Maybe we could “channel” some money to this worthy cause from these recent increased sources of revenue…road tax, sewer tax, potable water tax, taxes on higher property valuations, increased tax rates on higher property valuations, parking kiosks. I hope I didn’t leave anything out (except what seems to be the inevitable higher rates for non-potable water yet to come).
Let’s get serious now. How about a city earnings tax, from those who just received an increase in minimum wage, all the way to the one percenters! The city could also tax retirees to make it fair, such as taxes on pensions, annuities, and retirement plan withdrawals. New York and California are famous for this so why not emulate them? The City of Flagstaff can lead the way for the rest of Arizona.
Seriously, wake up, Flagstaff!
