.As our city struggles with its budget, it is easy to overlook the importance of “small things.”
On February 7 I attended a Flagstaff Police Department supervisors meeting at which the Chief read a letter from a young woman in Canada who was stranded here in the middle of night in the cold winter of 2008 during her trip from Kansas to Phoenix. She had to catch a bus and there was no one in the train station except two police officers who offered to call a taxi but she had not enough money so they gave her a ride to the bus station. Ten years later she remembered the kindness and concern for her safety and took her time to write. Although she could not recall the names of the officers she still wanted to express her appreciation to the City for the quality of its police force.
We should show our appreciation of such police service especially at a time when our police force is smaller than in 2008 despite our population growth. This requires an adequate budget, please urge our Council to provide it.
