Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra gave our town a patriotic gift with their annual Fourth of July/Independence Day concert. Prior to the concert, a few people gave some remarks about the American Revolution and the struggle to establish our country. One gentleman shared remarks made by Abraham Lincoln in 1858.
Lincoln was referring to the drafters of the Declaration and their intention in creating this document as the foundation of our country. These words are as pertinent today as they were over 150 years ago.
"Wise statesmen as they were, they knew the tendency of posterity to breed tyrants: and so they established these great self-evident truths, that when in the distant future, some man, some faction, some interest, should set up the doctrine that none but rich men, or none but Anglo-Saxons, were entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, [then] their posterity might look up again to the Declaration of Independence, and take courage to renew the battle which their fathers began."
Thank you, President Lincoln. Wake up, America! Renew the battle!
