President Trump claims he wants to unify the country and heal its divisions and yet he pardons former Sheriff Arpaio?
This is the same Arpaio who targeted not only Latinos but also Maricopa County supervisors with whom he disagreed.
This is the same Arpaio who cost Maricopa County taxpayers tens of millions of dollars defending the sheriff's outrageous actions and further millions in damages awarded by the courts to the victims of his racial profiling.
Normally people are pardoned only after serving at least part of their sentences, which Arpaio has not, and after showing some degree of remorse for their actions, which Arpaio has not. We like to mouth the aspirational platitude that no man is above the law. But in this case Arpaio has certainly been shown to be immune to the consequences of his racist policies.
By pardoning Arpaio, Trump shows himself to be firmly wed to the white supremacy movement. Is this the way to heal and unify the country?
