Elk in need of safe crossings
Habitat fragmentation is a major problem for wildlife. Fragmentation comes in many forms. Fences, roads, residential developments, towns and cities all break up wildlife habitat. But there is one form of fragmentation that goes on for miles and miles: Interstate highways are a major obstacle for all wildlife.

Trash can be deadly for our animal friends
Litter is unsightly, costs you a lot of money to clean up and it can be deadly. The following stories of wildlife and litter happened in Pennsylvania but the message applies wherever slobs leave their trash in the outdoors.

Route 66 pocket parks are gems
Pocket parks. I like them. I have always appreciated gritty efforts to preserve low-key green space amid the swirls of urban life. Some trees. A bench or two. Connecting paths. That's all a pocket park really needs to achieve its assigned mission.

Quality over quantity: A local's take
When we conduct our Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association Saturday morning group trail runs, invariably someone new to Flagstaff asks, "how far was that?" I glance over at my running pal David Blanchard, we both smile knowing the run was 6 miles, and we answer in unison, "it feels like 8." After many years of altitude running in Flagstaff, I realized that tracking miles in the training log were meaningless. Running here is all about the effort, not the distance.

Local runners compete at world championships
Flagstaff is a sporty town and on any given Monday, it's easy to find interesting and athletic-related answers to the question, "What did you do this weekend?" Responses can cover a range of topics: rafting trips with visiting friends, hiking up Mount Humphreys, 100-mile bike rides, rugby tournaments, kickball games with the neighborhood, skiing, and watching the Cardinals play.
