Medicaid expansion has human side

To the editor:

Expanding AHCCCS (Arizona's Medicaid program) is critical to the health and wellbeing of families living in Coconino County. As a large primary care group-practice serving our community, Canyonlands Healthcare strongly support the governor's proposal to restore and expand AHCCCS coverage for adults.

Lost in this current debate is how the current freeze has already cost more than 141,000 Arizona citizens health coverage and how expansion will restore coverage to adults and expand coverage to more than twice the number of who have been dropped.

For example, adults who had a child become an adult have lost AHCCCS coverage because they are no longer a family with children. Many of these adults are ill and need ongoing medical care or medications. Imagine what it is like to lose health coverage when you are in the middle of chemo-therapy or need surgery to save your life. Sadly, this is something our healthcare professionals address each day.

Expanding AHCCCS coverage is about more than economics, it is about the health of our neighbors and community. As healthcare providers to this community, we appreciate your support of expansion of Medicaid services.

Unfortunately Obamacare and this medicaid expansion is all about economics and politics, as evidenced by the fact that the Democrats structured their so-called healthcare reform as a mandate, and the Supreme Court ruled it is in fact a tax, now to be enforced by the IRS. That ought to make healthcare way more affordable! This law is already failed. It hasn't done anything to make healthcare more affordable, it's done the opposite. Yes we all need healthcare, but we also need responsible reform.
