On November 3, 2017, Russell “Rusty” Howard Burdick, Jr. (68) passed away peacefully in the home of his daughter, Allison, in Herriman, UT, after a valiant battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Born September 1, 1949 in Woodlands, CA to Russell, Sr. and Nathel Brown Burdick, Rusty was the oldest of 10 children. His family moved to Arizona and settled in St. Johns. After serving for 2-years in the Northwestern States LDS Mission, Russ married his college sweetheart, Susan Harris, on December 30, 1970 in the Mesa Arizona Temple.
Russ graduated from ASU in 1973. In 1976, Russ graduated with the 1st class of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. He worked as the Apache County Deputy Attorney in St. Johns, AZ for 27 years. Russ worked in Flagstaff, AZ as the legal counsel and the Chief Corporate Compliance Officer to the Northern Arizona Regional Behavioral Health Authority, retiring in 2011.
Throughout his life, Rusty was active in community and religious service, helping in many organizations, and serving as St. Johns City Mayor and as Bishop twice. In 2012, Russ and Susan were called to serve in the San Juan Puerto Rico Mission and assigned to the island of Antigua/Barbuda. In March 2017, Russ moved from Phoenix, AZ to Herriman, UT to be cared for by his daughter, Allison, and her family. Despite a terminal brain disease, Russ always believed, “Life is good.”
Russell is survived by his eternal companion, Susan Harris Burdick; 5 children, Kevin Burdick, Stephanie (Hugh) Mouritsen, Allison (Michael) Petersen, Carrie (Jared) Rice, and Emily Peña; 19 grandchildren; stepmother, Margaret “Peggy” Burdick; 8 siblings; and many more beloved family members. Russ was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, granddaughter Dempsey Burdick, brother Brian Burdick, and brother-in-law, Reed Spotten.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at the LDS Church on 4525 E. Knox Road in Phoenix, AZ 85044, with viewings being held at the same location on Friday, November 17th, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00-11:30 am. Funeral arrangements made by Meldrum Mortuary in Mesa, AZ.
