In the early morning hours of November 7, 2017, the spirit of Paul Roger VanderMale left his body. He passed away at home, surrounded by his family. He died after a five year battle with colon cancer and its many side effects.
Paul was born on February 17, 1952, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He lived happily there with his parents until his late teen years when the desire to see more of the world became stronger. He traveled and lived in many places in the land, including British Columbia, Colorado, Tennessee and Arizona. He spent the last 30 plus years of his life in Flagstaff and Rimrock Arizona.
Paul married Carol Loving in 1976 and helped to raise her four children, Nick, Drew, Hannah and Luke. They divorced five years later. In 1983, Paul met and married the true love of his life, Carolyn Steinegger. Their son, Kyle, was born in 1985.
Paul was an artisan for all of his adult life. He started as a silversmith and jewelry maker and ended as a cabinet and custom furniture maker. Evidence of his unique furniture designs can be found in many fine homes in Flagstaff, Sedona and Rimrock.
Paul would like us to remember him as a sailor. He and Carolyn had a beautiful blue sail boat that they used many times on all the lakes in Arizona. He always dreamed of sailing the ocean, so we hope he is doing that now.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Don VanderMale and Faith Maliepaard and his step-father John Maliepaard and by his faithful dog companion Grip. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, son, Kyle, Brothers Michael and Carl and their wives Vicky and Joan, and six nieces and nephews.
Paul will be remembered for his good heart and sly humor. Sail on, Paul.
Condolences may be mailed to Caroline Vandermale, P.O. Box 1223, Rimrock AZ 86335
