EVANGELINE L. JACOBS
December 13, 1941 ~ October 3, 2012
Evangeline Lucille Young Jacobs passed away unexpectedly in Santa Rosa, California on October 3, 2012 surrounded by family. Evangeline was born in Lubbock, Texas in 1941 to Arthur and Vera Berg Young and was the youngest of three children.
Evangeline graduated from Texas Tech University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Shortly thereafter, she made her way to California and was one of only a handful of women to graduate from Stanford with a Master of Science in Statistics. She went on to work at IBM where she met her husband of forty-three years, Neil Jacobs. At only 28 she became a mother to his five children: Michelle, Kim, Alison, Joseph, and Michael. The family spent many happy years in the Los Gatos hills, and was joined by another child, Caroline.
The family left California in 1977 eventually settling in Flagstaff, Arizona. There, Evangeline joined the faculty at Northern Arizona University in the College of Business as a Senior Lecturer in Computer Information Systems and as the one time Assistant Dean. Evangeline was a consummate professional throughout her tenure as an information systems professional and educator until her retirement in 2003. Evangeline was also an active member of the community through volunteer efforts with the San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church. Evangeline and Neil cultivated their love of travel and other cultures—traveling the world and living abroad on multiple occasions. In 2010, Evangeline and Neil relocated to Santa Rosa to be closer to their children and grandchildren, and the Northern California coast Evangeline loved so much.
Evangeline is remembered as a woman of immense grace, compassion, courage, and intelligence; despite a life full of more challenges than many endure she maintained her sense of humor and always placed others needs first.
Evangeline is survived by her husband Neil, five children: Michelle Wothers (Gary), Kim Elkins (Bill), Joseph (Danette Krueger), Michael (Diane), and Caroline (Michael Lawless), eleven grandchildren, and many friends whose lives are infinitely richer for having been blessed by her presence. Those of us fortunate enough to have loved her and be loved by her will miss her for the rest of our lives.
A Memorial Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held at a later date, with a reception to follow. Details will be provided prior to this service.
