The City of Flagstaff Sustainability Program invites the community to celebrate America Recycles Day today.

City staff and volunteers will be providing recycling education on reducing plastic bag use and increasing plastic bag recycling. Community members who participate in a quick recycling game will receive a free reusable shopping bag and the chance to win $25 in groceries. Staff and volunteers will be at the following Flagstaff grocery stores from 4 - 6 p.m.:

- Safeway, 4910 US Highway 89

- Albertsons, 1416 E. Route 66

- Bashas’, 2700 S. Woodlands Village Blvd.

- Fry’s, 201 N. Switzer Canyon Dr.

Of the estimated nine million plastic bags used by City of Flagstaff residents each year, only a fraction are properly recycled. Plastic bags and other soft plastics (e.g. bread bags, cereal box bags, toilet paper and paper towel wraps, etc.) should be returned to grocery stores, not placed in the curbside recycling container. Plastic bags and wraps require a different recycling process than plastic bottles because of their different weight and chemical make-up.
