The Canyon fire 15 miles north-northeast of Blue Ridge is now estimated at more than 5,000 acres, and Highway 87 is closed again this afternoon due to thick smoke and concern for safety.

Motorists are being turned back in Winslow and near the junction of Highway 87 and Lake Mary Road.

The fire is burning in juniper, pinyon and ponderosa pine about 15 miles northeast of Blue Ridge Reservoir near Jacks Canyon, or about 25 miles due east of Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness.

No structures are threatened and no injuries have been reported.

Spot fires jumped Highway 87 on Saturday, but fire crews kept the fire to the west of the highway.

About 130 personnel are fighting the lightning-ignited blaze, which was reported Friday morning.

Firefighters are using three heavy air tankers and one heavy firefighting helicopter, in addition to engines and helicopters with water buckets.
