A 5-year-old Timberline boy died in a tractor accident Wednesday night.
According to information from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, the boy died after his father backed over him with the tractor.
According to witnesses, the father was pulling out of his driveway when he saw a vehicle approach and decided to back into the driveway to allow the vehicle to pass. Initially, the man's children had been several hundred feet behind him playing with family animals, according to witnesses.
Although the investigation is ongoing, investigators believe the boy ran behind the tractor and his father did not see him until it was too late.
Despite lifesaving efforts by a neighbor, medics and hospital staff, the boy was pronounced dead at Flagstaff Medical Center.
The incident is being considered an accident and no enforcement action is anticipated, according to the sheriff's office.
The boy's father is an officer with the Flagstaff Police Department. He was not on duty at the time of the accident.
Sgt. James Jackson of the Flagstaff Police Department said that Chief Brent Cooper and everybody at the police department extend condolences to the officer's family and friends. Jackson also said Cooper asks the public to respect the family's privacy.
