Head to Theatrikos this weekend for a totally different type of theater experience. Theatrikos Theater Company will perform "Avenue Q" starting Friday. Winner of the Tony "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q is an adults-only, puppet-packed musical. Performances will be three weekends at the Doris Harper-White Community Playhouse, Aug. 4-20.

The laugh-out-loud musical tells the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Directed by theater veterans John Propster and Jan Rominger, this production deals with adult content and puppet sex and is intended for mature audiences.

“Puppets make it safe to laugh at inappropriate subject matter that one cannot laugh at publicly,” Propster said. “That’s very current in today’s political climate.”

Rominger calls the show one of her all-time favorites. “The quirky humor and now-iconic music will leave audiences still singing along when they return to work on Monday,” she said.

The cast of 14 includes Madison Butler, Nick Dietz, Chrissy Doba, Weston Duhamel, Frank Furtado, Kelsey Hontz, Sarah Kelley, Brock LaPlume, Joe Maniglia, Zachary Mauck, Stephen Root, Esther Smith, Abigail Stokley and Dennis Verret.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. Sundays Aug. 4-20. Individual tickets for all performances are $26 plus applicable fees. Friday's opening performance includes a post-show reception with the cast. A special “First Friday” pre-show reception on Aug. 4 will feature free refreshments and artwork in the lobby.

Tickets can be purchased at Theatrikos.com, by calling 774-1662 or by visiting the theater’s box office, which is open from noon-6 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and two hours prior to each performance.
