The Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking information about the suspicious death of a bull elk southeast of Flagstaff near Happy Jack.
Game and Fish officials received information on Nov. 4 from hunters who discovered the elk 30 yards from a stock tank near the southern portion of Game Management Unite 5A.
The bull elk had been scavenged by bears, leading investigators to believe the elk had been dead for several days.
“We hope the public will come forward,” said wildlife manager Garrett Fabian. “This animal was not taken during the regular bull elk hunting season, and it’s a shame to see that it died under suspicious circumstances.”
A reward of up to $8,000 is available for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the death of the animal. The reward is offered by way of the department’s Operation Game Thief Program.
The Arizona Elk Society is also offering an additional $2,500 reward for a conviction in the case.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the department’s Operation Game Thief hotline at (800) 352-0700, or visit http://www.azgfd.gov/ogt_form.shtml, and refer to case #17-004310. Callers can remain anonymous upon request.
