Avalanche studies

James Foulks with KPAC discusses observations and environmental factors within a snow pit. A snow pit is excavated to better determine stability on a specific slope and aspect. Items measured include: overall snow depth, temperature gradient throughout the snow, and characterization of different layers of snow based on hardness, thickness, snow grain form and snow grain size. Stability tests are also conducted to simulate a load on the snowpack, how the snowpack will react when loaded and how reactive specific weak layers are.
