Mayor Presler: Looking forward, not back

Arizona Daily Sun Readers kindly selected me as Best Public Servant and Best Elected Official for 2008. Thank you! It is the best honor I could receive.

What a year! Sunday morning coffee really hasn't been the same since being elected as Mayor. June 14, 2009, and the editorial in the paper that day was no exception. I acknowledge the comments, but I respectfully disagree. When I met with the editor the next morning, he commented that he considered the headline, "Mayor Still Growing in Leadership Role," but chose to use the word "Struggling" rather than "Growing." I believe that I am growing, improving, and succeeding in this role. More importantly, the entire Flagstaff City Council has been hard at work on a variety of complex issues. We've sure had some zingers! At the same time, I am very proud at our ability to do more with less. As a council, we've saved beat officers and police jobs, kept firefighters and their engines buzzing about, and continue a vibrant parks and recreation program at the city. Our water is clean, our air quality is very good, and we continue to implement sustainable practices throughout the city. Everyone at the city took a pay cut, including me. I live boldly, and that makes me a lightning rod for political and controversial issues. I work hard though to find amenable compromises on council.

Many things stay the same. I continue to teach business law and ethics at Northern Arizona University, continue to serve as vice president of the Coconino County Bar Association, and continue to be involved in my church and appreciate Sunday's sermons. I continue to be the person that I am despite the office I hold. I think my greatest downfall in this role has been that I could care less about what's politically correct. At times, I stick my neck out -- knowing it might get chopped off in the process. Leadership requires tough decisions in tough times and a sense of what is best for the entire community. If you asked me personally, I would tell you that I don't mind the train horns. If you asked me as mayor, I would tell you that I expect those train horns to be silent. The city manager tells me it will be accomplished this fall. I will hold him to that commitment. Serving as mayor means that I represent all people in the city of Flagstaff. If that means we open the conversation and welcome all voices to be heard at the table, I accept that. I want the best result, even if it takes a little longer. You have a right to be heard before the council and your voice matters. I am the same person inside the meeting as I am outside the meeting. It's about authentic leadership and I work hard to ensure your voice is heard in the decision making process. I have made mistakes, but the important thing is that I pick up, learn from them, and move forward applying the new information. I would say that we have had more wins than losses. Together, we are doing good work in the city of Flagstaff.

These economic times are unprecedented as we are operating at millions of dollars less than we were under previous administrations. Most of my colleagues don't understand why I want to serve in these tough times because, over time, we see that it is easy to point the finger and difficult to accept the responsibility in government. I see these tough times as an opportunity to rise up and meet the challenges before us as a community, build partnerships, and find solutions to complex community issues. While the editor used quite a bit of ink to debate the past decisions and compare me to the former mayor of Flagstaff, I hope to utilize the ink here today to talk about the positive things that I have had the honor of working on in the past year. I would like to highlight many of them here, with the complete list available in the online version of this column at www.azdailysun.com:

" I voted for and contributed my personal max to sara, this is something that I regret every week when council meets. She has chosen to run the council as her kingdom and I cannot understand why nobody stands up to her, you are council members and your vote and voice are equally important, please stand up. She lets the citizens speaks their three minutes then flashes a condescending smile and ignores their input and votes her opinion, not that of the constituents. I beg all registered voters and readers to register to vote and elect a real candidate in the next election. We have learned the young, insecure, inexperienced, silver spoon lawyer has no idea what it takes to survive let alone succeed in Flagstaff, lets not make the same mistake in the next election. As they say in the world of politics, if you are forced to list your own accomplishments you are already finished. Lets hope this is true. "

I don't think I would want to sit down and talk to her during lunch because she might try and take credit for that too .... I'll just put my next vote for myself!! "

Yea story time at the Library and season tickets to the Lady Jacks represent a true assault on politics as usual!
Then she opposes renting office space to a federal agency based solely on the desire to score political points. She comes across as inept and sort of pathetic (the mentions below of class president are pretty accurate). "

I thank her for bringing such youthful intellegence and energy to the stagnant Flagstaff politics. Same ole, same old attitude politicians are finally realizing the ball is not in their court and they are getting uncomfortable. If you all are so hypocritical of the mayor's work and why your agendas haven't been at the fore front, then do something about it and run for mayor. We'll see if you all get the same warm reception from everybody, i doubt it. Even the City manager is young, whats next... "

" I'm an active member and participant in several of the groups and organizations Sarah claims to be involved in. I can tell you that I have yet to see her attend any meetings or participate in any manner. Simply being on the roster doesn't cut it. I wonder how many other items on her list are as inflated as the ones I know of? You're not fooling anyone.

Sarah, maybe its time to pare down the supposed activities and focus on a few things you can become involved with and actively support.

Impressed with your list I am not. 2010 - Anyone but Presler! "

Attend Council Meetings wrote on Jun 26, 2009 3:09 PM:

" Many of the comments regarding the Mayor's lack of leadership are right on. I urge all of you to watch the video streaming of the City Council meetings. You can find them on the City's website: http://flagstaff.az.gov/index.aspx?NID=1461

The Mayor is in way over her head, which for her age and lack of experience, isn't surprising. Her real flaw, though, is that she is so arrogant and so busy touting her "accomplishments," that she won't stop to listen to anyone else. "Bully" is a great word to describe her behavior toward those who dare to disagree with her.

Anyone who cares about having real leadership in city government should think twice about supporting Sara Presler for Mayor in 2010. She has slowed Flagstaff's progress in so many areas. "

The majority of events I have seen you at, you are only there to make a presence-not to be actively involved. You make your little promises with your little speech and then you leave. Hopefully Flagstaff residents will come to their senses next time and vote on common sense instead of their feelings. "

Begay wrote on Jun 25, 2009 12:50 AM:

" "Native American relationships, including leadership visits with Navajo, Hopi, Hualapai and Havasupai"

Presler came into her role as mayor of Flagstaff a staunch supporter of toilet water snowmaking at Snowbowl.
Now that the case appears to be a done deal she calls it "unethical" and claims to be building relations with Natives? Who is she kidding?
The Tribes view the City of Flagstaff as a hostile entity and she has done hardly anything to improve that relationship except for a handful of token visits to neighboring Native communities. She's playing politics to secure a future... in what? "

Carolyn wrote on Jun 24, 2009 8:39 PM:

" How dare she claim Native Relationships (is she implying good relationships?) amongst her accolades. Standing by while sacred sites and places are blatently being desecrated in her backyard is NOT acceptable by anyone with a reverent bone in their body. Neither is using un-holy water to make snow on a holy mountain. Would she want her children or grandchildren baptized in water that contains things that could alter their gender? What part of sacred doesn't she understand? What part of the word "sacred" is she not able to communicate to her council? From wisdom I understand that people who will list their accomplishments as loudly as she has usually will be running for a higher office. I hope she prays for the wisdom to change the level of respect that all elected officials have/don't have for the Indigenous People of the area and brings that respect to whatever future office she is aspiring to by listing all of her accomplishments and having the audacity to list relationships with native people as one of her accomplishments. Real power, if that's what she desires, is the power to do what is right. Real power is the courage to change the seemingly unchangeable, and that includes the lack of respect for the 13 tribes who consider this mountain sacred. If nothing changes, nothing changes. God is watching you. "

Matthew Quigley wrote on Jun 24, 2009 6:45 PM:

" Accomplishments? I read her list. There's nothing of substance. Very disappointing. All of the participation in those "feel good" programs means absolutely nothing to mainstream Americans. If Sarah chooses to participate in them, that's fine, but she appears to be boastful of her participation in multiple community programs. I want to read about topics of substance; a tough stance against folks who routinely break the law, (drunks and vagrants) in this town and negatively affect tourism. Flagstaff is the gateway to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, etc. City government sets a poor example and negatively effects local businesses by not locking these people up. The cold reception to ICE was simply politicians catering to the votes of the Hispanic community. Most Flagstaff citizens knew what was really happening. Sarah could have set herself apart and taken a stand to enforce laws of those who are here illegally. She didn't - A dissapointing display of leadership. .

I’d like to see Sarah focus on the business community and remove the bureaucratic impediments that stifle business growth and job creation - in other words, “stop acting like the President”, who seems to be doing everything in his power to bring the American economy to a standstill. The private sector drives the economy, not the government. When the local economy improves, more funding will become available to improve infrastructure, enhancements of city services, etc. "

MT wrote on Jun 24, 2009 5:39 PM:

" Nice resume Sara, but where's the substance? As the saying goes, "the truth hurts" sometimes. Perhaps if you had some real accomplishments rather than a long list of volunteer work and public appearances then the previous article would have been better suited to say "growing" rather than "struggling." Unfortunately, making public appearances or volunteering doesn't make you a good leader, just a visible one.

And really, writing a "pat myself on the back" letter to convey to people what your "accomplishments" are is rather juvenile and quite sad. If you do good work and make a difference you won't have to write these letters because your work will speak for itself and editorials like the one your defending yourself against won't be written. Too bad there wasn't a real live Flagstaff citizen, who is half as proud of this list as you are, to write this letter to boost your ego.

At least now you can add "Arizona Daily Sun Guest Editorialist" to your long list of accomplishments. "

" Mayor Presler's essay was embarrassingly self-serving, and more than a little defensive, and I resented the basic premise that everything is fine; we’re working hard and doing swell. I don’t think the true concern of the citizens of Flagstaff is how many feel-good projects to which she can attach her name, but rather how the City of Flagstaff will deal with the diminishing revenues in the immediate future. If the Mayor believes the recession is in effect already over, and that revenues are going to bounce back, next year, the citizens of Flagstaff need to know that. If she sees a continuing revenue short-fall, we need to know that, too, and what her plan is to deal with it. A great deal of City of Flagstaff’s revenue is derived from property tax, and that will not recover for several years, despite what developers and real estate executives say. How is the City of Flagstaff going to deal with future budget restraints? Unfortunately, no where in her voluminous list of accomplishments was that addressed. "

" Sara please let it go. A thick skin is what is called for. Work hard to do what is good for the people and let them decide. Chin up this is the good fight.
The forces that are combining to challenge our new mayor are business oriented. The local Chamber of Commerce and the other "whats in it for me" voices are not getting the perks they are used to and they are screaming about it. "We want the good old boy system back" is their cry. These voices are organized and well funded. And they are out to take away from the citizens and give to business interests the whole store. This has been the story of Flagstaff since the early 1970's and its still in play. Our citizens are so harried by what it takes to make a living in our town they do not have enough time to raise their heads to see what is really going on. The business community likes it that way. They can dazzle you with fears and popular prejudices while the other hand goes into your pocket. Expect to see the "give it all to businesses" candidates Joe Donaldson, Joe Haughey or their clones on the ballot for mayor next election but dont vote for them. That is unless you like low wages and high costs of living in our little town. That is what our businees community has brought you over the years. The fact that they have gotten away with that for so long is proof that they people are too busy to see what is really good for them. "

And they don't get paid a penny for their work and seldom do they get any acknowledgement at all. They do more than just show up when a ribbon is to be cut or a few thousand taxpayer dollars is to be handed over to groups like Pride in the Pines or $100million from those same taxpayers to be wasted on luxury items for the few.

Real leadership would be in saving some of that train horn silencing money and giving it back to the taxpayers.

So quit feeling sorry for yourself. "
