Mayor Presler: Looking forward, not back
Arizona Daily Sun Readers kindly selected me as Best Public Servant and Best Elected Official for 2008. Thank you! It is the best honor I could receive.
What a year! Sunday morning coffee really hasn't been the same since being elected as Mayor. June 14, 2009, and the editorial in the paper that day was no exception. I acknowledge the comments, but I respectfully disagree. When I met with the editor the next morning, he commented that he considered the headline, "Mayor Still Growing in Leadership Role," but chose to use the word "Struggling" rather than "Growing." I believe that I am growing, improving, and succeeding in this role. More importantly, the entire Flagstaff City Council has been hard at work on a variety of complex issues. We've sure had some zingers! At the same time, I am very proud at our ability to do more with less. As a council, we've saved beat officers and police jobs, kept firefighters and their engines buzzing about, and continue a vibrant parks and recreation program at the city. Our water is clean, our air quality is very good, and we continue to implement sustainable practices throughout the city. Everyone at the city took a pay cut, including me. I live boldly, and that makes me a lightning rod for political and controversial issues. I work hard though to find amenable compromises on council.
Many things stay the same. I continue to teach business law and ethics at Northern Arizona University, continue to serve as vice president of the Coconino County Bar Association, and continue to be involved in my church and appreciate Sunday's sermons. I continue to be the person that I am despite the office I hold. I think my greatest downfall in this role has been that I could care less about what's politically correct. At times, I stick my neck out -- knowing it might get chopped off in the process. Leadership requires tough decisions in tough times and a sense of what is best for the entire community. If you asked me personally, I would tell you that I don't mind the train horns. If you asked me as mayor, I would tell you that I expect those train horns to be silent. The city manager tells me it will be accomplished this fall. I will hold him to that commitment. Serving as mayor means that I represent all people in the city of Flagstaff. If that means we open the conversation and welcome all voices to be heard at the table, I accept that. I want the best result, even if it takes a little longer. You have a right to be heard before the council and your voice matters. I am the same person inside the meeting as I am outside the meeting. It's about authentic leadership and I work hard to ensure your voice is heard in the decision making process. I have made mistakes, but the important thing is that I pick up, learn from them, and move forward applying the new information. I would say that we have had more wins than losses. Together, we are doing good work in the city of Flagstaff.
These economic times are unprecedented as we are operating at millions of dollars less than we were under previous administrations. Most of my colleagues don't understand why I want to serve in these tough times because, over time, we see that it is easy to point the finger and difficult to accept the responsibility in government. I see these tough times as an opportunity to rise up and meet the challenges before us as a community, build partnerships, and find solutions to complex community issues. While the editor used quite a bit of ink to debate the past decisions and compare me to the former mayor of Flagstaff, I hope to utilize the ink here today to talk about the positive things that I have had the honor of working on in the past year. I would like to highlight many of them here, with the complete list available in the online version of this column at www.azdailysun.com:

Yea story time at the Library and season tickets to the Lady Jacks represent a true assault on politics as usual!
Then she opposes renting office space to a federal agency based solely on the desire to score political points. She comes across as inept and sort of pathetic (the mentions below of class president are pretty accurate). "

Sarah, maybe its time to pare down the supposed activities and focus on a few things you can become involved with and actively support.
Impressed with your list I am not. 2010 - Anyone but Presler! "

The Mayor is in way over her head, which for her age and lack of experience, isn't surprising. Her real flaw, though, is that she is so arrogant and so busy touting her "accomplishments," that she won't stop to listen to anyone else. "Bully" is a great word to describe her behavior toward those who dare to disagree with her.
Anyone who cares about having real leadership in city government should think twice about supporting Sara Presler for Mayor in 2010. She has slowed Flagstaff's progress in so many areas. "

She will not get my vote again. I have inside info that Sarah called and asked numerous people to make positive comments on the one year in office article. Sounds to me like she did not get enough people to do that so she had to toot her own horn. Bring on the next election! "

Presler came into her role as mayor of Flagstaff a staunch supporter of toilet water snowmaking at Snowbowl.
Now that the case appears to be a done deal she calls it "unethical" and claims to be building relations with Natives? Who is she kidding?
The Tribes view the City of Flagstaff as a hostile entity and she has done hardly anything to improve that relationship except for a handful of token visits to neighboring Native communities. She's playing politics to secure a future... in what? "

I’d like to see Sarah focus on the business community and remove the bureaucratic impediments that stifle business growth and job creation - in other words, “stop acting like the President”, who seems to be doing everything in his power to bring the American economy to a standstill. The private sector drives the economy, not the government. When the local economy improves, more funding will become available to improve infrastructure, enhancements of city services, etc. "

And really, writing a "pat myself on the back" letter to convey to people what your "accomplishments" are is rather juvenile and quite sad. If you do good work and make a difference you won't have to write these letters because your work will speak for itself and editorials like the one your defending yourself against won't be written. Too bad there wasn't a real live Flagstaff citizen, who is half as proud of this list as you are, to write this letter to boost your ego.
At least now you can add "Arizona Daily Sun Guest Editorialist" to your long list of accomplishments. "

Why don't you run for Mayor next election, sounds to me like you think you can do a better job, go out and do something instead of sit home and complain. I think Sara has done one heck of a job so far. Midge, I would like to see your list of items you are concerned about and then your list of what you have done to try to help. Hmmmm........
Go get em Sara, I don't live in Flagstaff anymore, but if I did you would get my vote again.... "

The forces that are combining to challenge our new mayor are business oriented. The local Chamber of Commerce and the other "whats in it for me" voices are not getting the perks they are used to and they are screaming about it. "We want the good old boy system back" is their cry. These voices are organized and well funded. And they are out to take away from the citizens and give to business interests the whole store. This has been the story of Flagstaff since the early 1970's and its still in play. Our citizens are so harried by what it takes to make a living in our town they do not have enough time to raise their heads to see what is really going on. The business community likes it that way. They can dazzle you with fears and popular prejudices while the other hand goes into your pocket. Expect to see the "give it all to businesses" candidates Joe Donaldson, Joe Haughey or their clones on the ballot for mayor next election but dont vote for them. That is unless you like low wages and high costs of living in our little town. That is what our businees community has brought you over the years. The fact that they have gotten away with that for so long is proof that they people are too busy to see what is really good for them. "
