SHS's B. Shrader nabs two state titles

The Sinagua junior set school records en route to stat emeet wins in the 800-meter run and the 1,600.

Sinagua's Brian Shrader ran away with two individual titles in the Class 4A, Division II state track and field championships at Mesa Community College on Wednesday.

The junior broke the tape in the 800-meter run and the 1,600 in school record times of 1 minute, 52.89 seconds and 4:13.01, respectively. He won the 1,600 last year.

Shrader, who'll go for 3,200 gold on Saturday, wasn't the only Mustang to win a state title as Alex Myers won the girls 3,200 with a personal-best time of 11:19.56.

"She made her move with about three laps to go and just left everybody behind," SHS coach Walter Taite said.

Also Wednesday, Page's Chris Chischilly repeated as 4A, D-II state shot put champ with a first-place throw of 52 feet, 2 inches.

Chischilly entered the state meet as the No. 1 seed in the shot put and discus. He will seek the discus title Saturday.

Sinagua's Taylor Stapley took third in the girls triple jump with a distance of 17-1 1/4.

She posted the top qualifying times in the 100- (14.71) and 300 hurdles (46.72). Those finals will be held Saturday.

Page's Jillian Nelson placed fifth in the girls discus, throwing 94-6. Teammate SaRaya Nalwood, whose better event is the shot put, did not make the finals.

SHS's girls 3,200 relay team of Myers, Mikayla Shannon, Megan Palley and Jamie Shrader took eighth (10:29.35).

Sand Devil pole vaulter Sean Gracia cleared 12-6 but was eliminated from the hunt for a title by failing to make 13 feet.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Results for Flagstaff High's and Coconino's competitors weren't available as of press time. Read Friday's Daily Sun for a recap of Wednesday's results.

" School record? Shrader's 4:13.01 in the 1600 is a new 4A state record, and the fastest 1600 at an AZ state meet in over 10 years, regardless of division. His 1:52.89 in the 800 is a new junior class state record, regardless of division. 4AII is absolutely loaded in boys middle and long distances. Nice job in the 1st day Flag athletes. Keep it up Saturday! "

" I have known Brian since he was a baby (his father is my first cousin) and wanted to give out a shout to Brian and the unbelieveable accomplishiments this young man has had in the past few years. He just started running cross country about a year and a half ago and is now the two time defending state champion in that particular event. He then started running the 800, 1600, etc. to help him with his training for cross country and won those races at state yesterday as well!! The kid is flat out one of the most amazing athletes the state has ever seen especially at his age (junior). I know I sound like a typical relative (very close to Brian as a matter of fact), but he deserves every bit of the acculades given to him. He is a wonderful person and has always been extremely humble with all of the success he has had. He is a terrific role model to any high school athlete out there. He is a not only a great athlete, but a terrific human being and I am extremely proud of him and for what lies ahead for Brian as well! "
