Lomong cruises in 1,500m quarterfinal
Lopez Lomong returned to the track in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday for the quarterfinals of the 1,500-meter run and had quite a bit of success.
Three days after falling short in his attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games in the 800, Lomong took a solid first step in ensuring a spot on the team in the 1,500. The former NAU All-American took first in his heat with a time of 3 minutes, 43.38 seconds. His time was second best among the three heats, behind just Alan Webb, who runs for Nike like Lomong.
"It felt great today out there (Thursday) and we'll just see how it goes (Friday)," Lomong said on the USATF Web site. "This is my race. It felt good."
Lomong missed out on qualifying for the team in the 800 by 11 tenths of a second and is trying to redeem himself.
Lomong will compete in the semifinals today at 8:05 p.m. If he is able to advance, the finals are set for Sunday at 5:50 p.m. That will be the final race of the Trials.
Anthony Famiglietti, who trains at NAU's Center for High Altitude Training, took an aggressive first step in qualifying for the '08 team in the 3,000 steeplechase.
Famiglietti had a large lead the majority of the race until Colorado's William Nelson started to chip away at the deficit. Famiglietti was able to hold off Nelson and take first with a time of 8:25.17. Nelson finished at 8:26.17.
Famiglietti, who competed in the '04 games in Athens, had the fastest overall time out of the two semifinal heats. The final for the steeplechase is set for Saturday at 2:45 p.m.
Several athletes with Flagstaff ties will compete today at the Trials.
David Paul will compete in the hammer throw finals, which start at 7 p.m. Renee Meltivier Baille and Amy Hastings will take to the track at 8:55 p.m. for the women's 5k finals. Abdi Abdirahman and Fasil Bizuneh will try and make the team in the 10k finals starting at 9:20 p.m.
